The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) and the Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Council (PHECC) are continuing the transition process from the Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI) Occupational First Aid (OFA) learner training standard to PHECC’s First Aid Response (FAR), as the recognised standard meeting the requirements of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007 (S.I. No. 299 of 2007).

The main actions and information points are as follows:

As and from 1 September 2017, the HSA will only recognise the PHECC First Aid Response Education and Training Standard (FAR) as meeting the needs of occupational first aid (OFA) in all workplaces.
Any QQI OFA 5N1207 learner certificate issued up to 31 August 2017 will be recognised by the HSA for the full 2 year duration of the certificate.
Any refresher certificate issued by a recognised training provider issued to 31st August 2017 will also be recognised by the HSA for the full 2 year duration of the certificate.

The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to meet the full range of needs of older people in a variety of care settings. The course will take place for 1 night a week for 10 weeks in the James O’Keeffe Institute, Newmarket.

On Completion of this course learners will be able to:
•Discuss a range of age related issues to include healthy ageing, global and national demographic trends, the normal physiological and psychological processes of ageing, the social impact of ageing on older people and differing attitudes to ageing and older people.

•Summarise the role of the health care assistant in providing care for older people.
•Discuss the issues related to an older person with mental illness or dementia and of living with chronic illness.

•Employ effective communication and adapt care and practices to meet the needs of older people with cognitive and sensory impairment and physical disabilities.
•Promote a range of aspects of care for the older person to include empowerment, advocacy, independence, individualised care, dignity, respect, choice, self-esteem and include family and carers as partners in care.
•Gain knowledge about the legislation and guidelines governing care provision and practice for older people.
•Learners will develop a defined understanding of the role of the healthcare assistant and recognise their responsibilities and limitations to the duties which they can carry out.
•Demonstrate communication skills which will facilitate effective care provision.

The Active Leadership Award is designed to provide trained, knowledgeable and enthusiastic community based physical activity leaders to sports and physical activity session in a number of different settings. Aisling Meehan is the solicitor for the Farmers Journal. Coming from a dairy farming background and has a hands-on experience of rural agricultural matters. As well as operating a niche agricultural law and tax practice from offices located at the home farm “Rathlahine Farm”, Aisling farms her own land located in North Clare. Rathlahine Farm is an award winning family farm owned by the Meehan family.
Qualifications and Experience
Aisling Meehan graduated from University of Limerick with an honours degree in Law and Accounting. She trained in the Tax Department of one of Ireland’s top five law firms, William Fry graduating as a Solicitor and Tax Consultant (AITI).
She has also completed FETAC 180-hour Certificate in Farming and was awarded a level 5 FETAC certificate in Animal and Crop Production as well as a level 6 FETAC certificate in Farm Business.
She is solicitor to the leading national farming newspaper in Ireland, the Irish Farmers Journal. She takes an active part in shaping agricultural legal and tax policy and regularly contributes to various legal, tax and business forums.
