Members of the IRD Duhallow’s Genealogy Group recently took part in the Historic Graves Project which was a LEADER funded project. This project involved surveying local graveyards and recording and transcribing the headstones in the graveyards. John Tierney and Jacinta Kiely, of Eachtra Archaeology, lead the graveyard surveys along with Mary Creedon as staff resource.
RSS and TÚS participants from IRD Duhallow along with much valued voluntary work from the community in grave recording and transcribing helped the development of this project in this region. Graveyards surveyed during this project included Clonfert, Glantance, Kilshannig, Clonmeen, Kilcorney (Old), Drishane, Taur, Lyre, Lismire / Bawnmore North, Dromtarriffe (Old), Kiskeam, Rockchapel, Ballydesmond.
In May 2015 the group presented an exhibition of some of the results of this project. As part of this exhibition print rubbings of the graves were on display as well as digital photographs outlining the key iconographic elements of the Arma Christi headstones of Duhallow. These surveys may be viewed by the public online at www.historicgraves.com.
