Day of the Regions

First brought to Ireland in 2012 by IRD Duhallow, the concept of the “Discover Duhallow… A Day of the Region Initiative” captures the essence of life in Duhallow and encouraged both locals and visitors alike to come out into their communities and to take part in the wide range of amenities, clubs, activities and resources that are on the doorstep in the region. More than 40 events were organised throughout Duhallow over a 10 day period. This was a joint transnational initiative with communities in 8 other European Countries taking part in their own regions.

Following its success in its first year, communities were at an advantage to take part in The Gathering in 2013 which was rolled out in Duhallow alongside the 2nd year of the Day of the Region initiative and grew from 10 days in the previous year to 6 weeks of events over the summer period. The Gathering helped to reach out to our families, friends and descendants who have moved away to invite them home during the Day of the Region Celebration.

In 2014, communities again came together and embraced the concept of the Day of the Region with events taking place throughout Duhallow for 9 consecutive weeks. Duhallow communities showcased and shared the very best of culture, sport, tradition and unique sense of fun they have to offer. It was a celebration of rural community life and showcased all that Duhallow has to offer individuals living in the region and people visiting. This was a fantastic opportunity to make people who are new to the community aware of the wealth of activities and resources available right here on their doorstep. There was something for everything to see and do regardless of age and gender.

Duhallow’s strongest asset is its people and IRD Duhallow has supported them through the bottom up approach to rural development in identifying the events they wished to organise and host for the Day of the Regions Initiative. The wide variety of events which take part in this LEADER funded initiative is a perfect example of the strong sense of community spirit that has been fostered and developed in Duhallow. IRD Duhallow would like to thank all community groups and businesses for continuing to support this initiative.
