In order to supplement the cost of producing the “meals on wheels” service, DCFS expanded the business into two other key facets, bakery and contract catering
Established in 1997, Duhallow Community Food Services is an award winning community enterprise providing a subsidised meal service to those that are not in a position to cook for themselves and are isolated because of age, illness, lack of transport or other disadvantages that result in living in a rural area.
While there are a number of activities at DCFS overseen by Manager Orlaith Tomkins and her team, the rural meals service is at the heart of the operation. Meals are provided at a reduced cost of €6 and they are delivered to people in the comfort of their own home. Alternatively people can come and visit our Community Dining Area sit down and enjoy their meal. In 2014 a total of 25,000 meals were delivered to households in Duhallow and it is expected that this will be surpassed in 2015.Many individuals also obtain some chilled meals additional to their cooked meal on a Friday to tide them over for the weekend.
In order to supplement the cost of producing the “meals on wheels” service, Duhallow Community Food Services expanded the business into two other key facets, bakery and contract catering. Duhallow Community Foods Services offers you a total food solution for any catering event and we can deliver to your own home the goodness of traditional home-cooked foods and a range of gourmet dishes to suit every palate. For family and community events, celebrations and gatherings, Duhallow Community Food Services offer a selection of meal options. We provide catering for communions, confirmations, funerals, Birthday Parties, social functions etc. We also provide baking to a number of local retail outlets and Kanturk Farmers Market as well as catering for the Comprehensive in Boherbue.
In December 2014 our centre moved from Boherbue to the new James O’Keeffe Innovative Centre, located on the grounds of the James O’Keeffe Institute Newmarket. This new food centre now facilitates our bakery, our rural meals services and the all new Community Dining Area. DCFS employs 22 people through CSP, RSS and Tús. The centre provides the opportunity for the long term unemployed to access employment locally.
