Cullen is approx 40 miles from Cork and Tralee. Cullen is in the parish of Millstreet and lies halfway between Mallow and Killarney. It is a small rural village on the outskirts of the Sliabh Luachra area with a rich musical tradition.
Bernard O’Donoghue the famous poet was born in Cullen. He won the Whitbread prize for poetry in 1995. He currently teaches Medieval English in Wadham College, Oxford.
St. Laitiaran’s Well can be found in the village near the old graveyard. St. Laitiaran is remembered on the 25th of July when rounds are made at the well to celebrate the Harvest. On the way down to the graveyard you pass the handball alley which is the only 60 x 30 ball alley in Co. Cork. The ball alley is on the site of the old St. James R.C. Church which was burnt down in the early 1900’s.
